Saskatchewan students in the Cowessess Community Educational Centre and Chief Kahkewistahaw Community School will soon have the opportunity to participate in a pilot program called RoboYOU, to help them develop basic digital literacy and computer programming skills by using robotics.

Created by Innovation Saskatchewan, RoboYOU is designed to provide Saskatchewan First Nations students in rural and remote communities with exposure to robotics for learning, creating and playing.  The program includes a focus on learning opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, commonly referred to as STEM.

“With digital technologies evolving at a fast pace, we want to help prepare Saskatchewan youth to meet the opportunities they bring,” Minister Responsible for Innovation Steven Bonk said.  “Through RoboYOU, we aim to provide students in First Nations communities with the chance to develop the technology skills they need and inspire them to consider careers in this area.”

RoboYOU will be offered to students in grades five through nine.  The students will be taught new concepts and will learn how to solve problems using robots.  They will also be exposed to examples of innovative technology solutions created by others.

The program has been designed to align with provincial curriculum outcomes, and was developed with assistance from the Ministry of Education, various schools as well as science and technology consultants from school divisions.

On completion of the five-month pilot, Innovation Saskatchewan will review the results and determine the next steps for expansion.
